Elements of Teaching

Necesaary Stuffs as a Teacher 

      It’s very much important for future teachers to always consider the Elements in teaching. There are 5 Elements all in all and theses are the teacher, learners, instructional materials, learning environment, and the personal behavior of the teacher. 

      Of course a teacher is one component of teaching  because the teacher is the center of instruction, but that was before in the old way of teaching because in our time today we mostly know that we are more student centered and the teacher serves as the facilitator of learning. For the next element we have the learners wherein they are the most important in the world of instruction because they are the one who are being educated  or taught. The next one are the instructional materials where the teacher needs to create in other to have a fun and have active activities. Lastly, the learning environment, this one talks about the environment where the learning will happen, is the classroom clean, does it have electric fans, windows, and enough chairs, is the learning environment conducive for learning? 
 

Teaching as an Art

      Teaching is considered as an art because a teacher doesn’t really just teach in the classroom,a teacher also creates the stuffs that are needed for his/her instruction. Factors such as teaching strategies, teaching assessments, values are some that the teacher creates when it is needed in his/her lesson plan or even in a syllabus. A teacher when delivering his/her lesson becomes creative because there he/she can apply different learning strategies for the different learning styles of the students. 

A Man of Character

     
      We future teachers have a role to play in the world of teaching few months from now. Since, every studenfs will look up to us we should always be the best version of ourselves. As I have thought of my cooperating teacher today I realized that its really better if there’s a distance between students and teacher but when I came to think of it what’s really hard is being very kind and considerate teacher to the students it’s much more hard most specially when your students know you already. That’s what I’ve thought of my cooperating teacher he’s really a man of Character he values respect more than anything else maybe because he already taught college students that is why he has a lot of patience to his naughty grade 11 students. 

      I can really say that I’ve learned so much from his instruction, he’s indeed a great and reliable teacher. As I am close to my last 2 hour of observation I will make sure that I will adopt his teaching strategies and classroom management plan and apply it in my future class. 

The 21st Century Teacher

       In years time a trend will come and come and it is the need for 21st Century Teachers for 21st Century Learners. As a millennial future teacher I think I can share some qualities of a 21st Century Teachers. First a teacher needs to open a Student Centered class, this class is where the students learn through their classmates and through the facilitation of the teacher, the teacher will only have a little time to mostly discuss because the curriculum of today is very different for most of the activities are more  on student centered. Second a teacher needs to be Forward in Thinking, he/she should be a progressive one, where he/she is open in any kind of teaching. They should understand how the world is changing and how things change in a small span of time. Third is the teacher should be an engager of active activities and cooperative learning, a philosopher John Dewey believes that Learning will occur when we do it that is why 21st teachers should be ready for active learning. Also, a nice way of acquiring knowledge is when students learn through groups because there they can discuss more about the things that are necessary without getting conscious. 

For me if these qualities are within a teacher he/she should be called a 21st Century teacher.

       Holy Angel University has its fulfilling mission and vision, these two are very evident to my cooperating teacher and in his classes. He always aims high when it comes to activities to do, he has this thinking that all his students are good and no one will be left behind.  He value Prayer so much, he starts and ends his classes with a prayer, he is very aware of everything, he always considers and consults his classes in every decision that he’ll make. I think that the Core Values such as Excellence, Christ centeredness are shown or very evident in his class. I would be glad if most of the teachers will be like him, very considerate and very Intelligent.

        A Teacher A Planner

As a pre-service teacher it is very necessary  that I have to  plan for everything that I will do. Before anything else a teacher should plan before the school year, before the first day, and the whole school year, Yes! That’s how it is every teacher should be a girl scout they should be “laging handa”, we might say that some things will happen that will lead us in a wrong way but if we will plan ahead of time, I think we will be more ready of this kind of stuffs.  

As a future teacher we need to have discipline in our class, if we have a very effective discipline or classroom management as I’ve said in my Wong#1 blog everything will fall into place, for everything follows when there’s the best classroom management.  

Educational Philosophy

My Cooperating Teacher is A Progressivist 

          Having a new place to observe is a big adjustment for me but since I have a very kind cooperating teacher I think, he made it more easy and more comfortable. As I observe my cooperating teacher, I think that he is a progressivist because he assures that in every lesson there will be learning that will occur within the students. Also, he involves every student in class to every lesson, he makes sure that everyone pays attention to what he is discussing.  More so collaborative learning is what he’s always into, he wants his class to work together in making the learning more interesting. What I really noticed about my cooperating teacher that is a quality of a progressivist is that he is very welcome to new learning, he always entertain the students who shares a learning in the class.

The First Day of School 

         Impressions are very important part of first school days because impressions tend to last most. That is why Mr.Wong is right with the thought that what you do in the first days of school will determine your success or failure for the rest of the school year.  You will either win or lose your class on the first days of school.

         When I become a teacher I will make sure that I have a well-managed class because most of us know that the most effective way to become an effective one is to be an effective classroom manager, when you have that management everything will fall into place, students’ respect, discipline, and responsibility. And so that I will get my students attention first so I can implement a proper management to them. Teachers should always put in mind that the success of the first day of school will be the success of the year. 

Orientation Day

Orientation Day

      Last July 20, 2018 we the students assigned at Holy Angel University (HAU) had our Orientation headed by Ma’am Supan the assistant principal for Senior High School. It is my first time to be deployed at HAU which is far from the DepEd school that I have observed before.  It is good that we have an orientation here because I will get to know their rules and be reminded of what should we do inside the classroom. 

      Here are some of the reminders given to us, of course always wear proper uniform when observing, wear decent clothes if will be allowed to observe on avWednesday. We were reminded to be punctual at all times, come 10mins before the time to make sure to not to be late. If you’re going to be absent for a day inform the cooperating teacher ahead of time. Do not do a buddy buddy system with the students, always maintain that respect that the students will have on you. No using of cellphones inside the classroom, respect the teacher while discussing, Be a initiator do not wait for the cooperating teacher to give you a task because they might forget that they can give you something to do like to check papers. 

     It is really good that we have this kind of orientations for us to be reminded of the rules and regulations of the cooperating school that we have to observe.  I am lucky to have the chance to  have my my last field study observation at HAU. 

WONG #1

  The Effective Manager 

 

    Since I started taking Education as my course I already believed that every teacher can be an effective one because we will surely learn as we study but I think I’m wrong that we will learn it inside the classroom because not everything can be learned by the book, it can be learned by experiences and observations. With the video of Harry K. Wong The Effective Teacher I have realized that the three characteristics he gave are really reliable to know to be an effective teacher. 

    I can say that it is really the first characteristic of an effective teacher is what matter the most and it is to be an extremely good classroom manager because to be one requires to know how to run a classroom and by that there will be ease in achieving and doing the things to be done in the classroom and the book has nothing to do with it. 

   The second characteristic is to be a master teacher where in the teacher needs to master her lessons to teach comfortably and teaching will occur when the students the teacher gets them to learn which is also a very effective characteristic because it is very much important to learn what to teach inside and outside the classroom.

    I also like the third characteristic which is being positive and having high expectations because when you believe and have trust with each other there will be a good outcome for everything and learning will occur. 

The Road I Choose To Take

                 I am Ma.Fatima Castro Maristela, 19 years old and a resident of Mamatitang, Mabalacat City, Pampanga. I finished my elementary years in Dona Asuncion Lee Integrated School Xevera Tabun, Mabalacat City and My High School years in Mary Help of Christians School Mabiga, Mabalacat City, Pampangs which is a all girls School.

                    I am currently studying in Holy Angel University (HAU) taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English. Deciding on what course will I take before went really hard because I still don't know what is appropriate to me and what course will suit me, but thank you god for helping me decide on what is proper for me.

                   I took education as my course because I have realized that I want to share my knowledge and inspire lives as I grow and teach. Other people ask why I want to teach someday when in fact it is hard task. Well I always say that teaching is a really  hard profession but as my professor always say, it would not be hard if you really have dedication for what you are aiming for, it would be easy and smooth as I learn.

                   "Learning is an active process" as John Dewey said, as this new chapter comes through my life I will make sure that I would do my best to learn and be at my peace with everything that I do. I hope I will be consistent in chasing my goals in life so that someday I will be a good and well trained educator.
